Towards Stronger Collaborative Dialysis Care Management

On behalf of the men and women of this year’s Organizing Committee, allow me to invite you and your dialysis staff to attend the 24th Postgraduate Course in Dialysis. This will be happening on October 5 to 7, 2017 at the Conference Halls of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute.

With the theme, “Towards Stronger Collaborative Dialysis Care Management,” the scientific program will highlight the various clinical, metabolic, hormonal and hematologic complications of uremia that undermine the well-being of dialysis patients and the clear need for a multi-disciplinary management approach to improve patient outcomes.

The course program will take you through a full day simultaneous pre-convention educational workshops on vascular access (60 slots), advanced peritoneal dialysis (120 slots) and renal nutrition (60 slots) plus symposia for renal technicians (120 slots) and social workers (60 slots). These will be followed by a 2-day convention proper, running almost parallel programs for doctors (200 slots) and nurses (900 slots) on the management of various uremic complications of dialysis patients. Altogether, the conference will feature 77 highly informative presentations delivered by well esteemed local and international exp erts. Dr. Adrian Liew, a renowned PD expert from Singapore and Dr. Bill Zhu, Clinical Support Manager of B Braun China graciously accepted our invitation to talk in this meeting.

As is customary, there will be NO ONSITE REGISTRATION except for the MDs Program. Please register early as this course will have limited slots, offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration starts on September 11, 2017. In case you will encounter problems with registration, kindly approach any pharmaceutical companies who have reserved slots for possible sponsorship.

Green Nephrology: Physicians as Stewards of Nature

It is with great pride and honor that the PSN Southern Tagalog Chapter, invite you to attend our upcoming 15th Midyear Convention entitled “Green Nephrology: Physicians as Stewards of Nature” on October 12 – 14, 2017 at Citystate Asturias Hotel, Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

The Scientific Committee has prepared a very interesting set of lectures that would help us understand the impact and interrelationship of our role as physicians (Nephrologists) to our environment (Mother Nature).

Dr. Antonio Talusan's Legacy

The PSN mourns the passing of one of its founding members Dr. Antonio D. Talusan (May 2, 1930-September 17, 2017), Dr. Talusan graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1956, and became the first Head of the Department of Medicine of the UP-PGH Renal Section in 1962. He served as Medical Director of the TV program Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko, which he founded in 1975. He served as President of the PSN from 1986-1988 before moving his practice to Lubbock, Texas. He was 87 years when he passed away.

Family members left to cherish his memory and continue his legacy are his wife, Celia; daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen and Galo Garcia, Karen and Mark Soriano, Janet and Paul Pedro, Yvette and Raffy Tomacruz.

May we invite members to include Dr. Talusan in their prayers, and reflect on the remarkable life he lead. Rest in peace Dr. Talusan, your good work will carry on.

Dr. Helen Ocdol was appointed by the Board of Trustees to head the PSN Dialysis Advocacy Group, which will spearhead all efforts of the PSN pertaining to legislation and health policies affecting the practice of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in the Philippines. Here, Dr. Ocdol writes on the comprehensive renal replacement therapy bill to be proposed in Congress and the Senate.

The Comprehensive Renal Replacement Therapy Act is a bill being proposed to provide a comprehensive renal replacement therapy (RRT) for patients with ESRD in the national, regional and provincial government hospitals. It encompasses the increase in the PhilHealth package rate for renal replacement therapy of its members and therefore the government appropriating funds for its fruition...
