Reposted for the general membership:

Dear Colleague,

It is our pleasure to inform you that the HOTT project's recommendations have been completed and can now be downloaded from the project's website, www.hottproject.com.

The recommendations were formulated and subsequently written by 40 anti-organ trafficking experts that participated in the project’s symposium in November 2014. The recommendations aim to improve the non-legislative response to trafficking in human beings for organ removal and address the following topics (by clicking on the recommendation, you will be directed to the report):

  1. The legal and ethical obligations of health care providers
  2. Protection of persons targeted or trafficked for organ removal
  3. Improving cross-border collaboration in criminal cases
  4. Stimulating and enhancing partnerships between transplant professionals and law enforcement

We thank the experts for their enthusiasm and dedication in completing these reports!

We are also pleased to share indicators that were developed under the project: these have been written for law enforcement, transplant professionals and victim support workers to help data collection and identification of trafficking in persons for the purpose of organ removal.

We encourage you to circulate the reports to persons in your network that could benefit from these results.

The project’s research results will be published in a book at the beginning of 2016. If you wish to receive a free copy, but have not yet communicated this to us, then please e-mail your request and shipping address to hottproject@erasmusmc.nl

  8. Philippine Society of Nephrology
  9. South African Renal Society
  10. Spanish Society of Nephrology (SEN)
  11. Swiss Society of Nephrology (SSN)

The Collective Membership category allows nephrology societies to sign up all their members collectively. Societies who wish to be eligible for the special annual rate must sign up at least 75% of their total membership.

Collective members of ISN are entitled to the same benefits as individual members including:

  1. Exclusive eligibility for ISN capacity building programs (Research & Prevention, Sister Renal Center, Continuing Medical Education, Educational Ambassadors, Travel Grants, Scholarships for Visiting Professors, Institutional Library Enhancements)
  2. Subscription to Kidney International (monthly journal) including online access to articles, current issues, and archives (a value of USD 1,150 to USD 2,300 depending on where you are located)

  10. And last but not least, actively participating, through ISN’s Outreach Programs and capacity building programs, in making a significant difference in parts of the world that have little or no formal renal care, education or access to knowledge.

The price per member is broken down into four groups of economies: High income, low income, lower middle income and upper middle income. ISN used the World Bank Purchase Power Parity GNI criteria to come up with a fair fee system (the Philippines is classified as a Lower Middle Income country):

Fee table:

Income Group100%90%80%
Low Income$50$60$70
Lower Middle Income$80$85$90
Upper Middle Income$105$110$115
High Income$120$125$130

Considering the normal rate for individual members is somewhere between US $203-217, this will really benefit the membership. Many thanks to the PSN board headed by our untiring President, Dr. Ma. Gina Nazareth and spearheaded by Dr. Robert Tanchanco! Once again congratulations to us all!

PSN PKDR Project: Pioneering PKD research in Asia

$
0
0

The PSN Polycystic Kidney Disease Registry (PKDR) Project was conceptualized in 2012 with the vision of establishing a modern database for our PKD patients. It was formally launched in 2013, in the presence of Dr. Lisa Guay-Woodford, the leading authority in PKD research today. Since then, the PKD Task Force has been busy with making the database forms, orienting the fellows on the database structure, and collecting initial data.

Polycystic kidney disease is one of the most common inherited renal disorders. The disease is often clinically silent, the natural course being progressive involvement of both kidneys. It accounts for 5-8% of ESRD, and unfortunately, there is very limited data as to disease progression, outcomes, and characteristics. Currently, there are only 3 existing PKD registries in the world, all being in the Western hemisphere. By establishing the PKDR, we are putting our country as the forerunner in PKD research in Asia.

Why is PKD research important?

A registry not only helps characterize those affected by disease, but also identifies those at risk for having the disease. This enables a better assessment of the impact of the disease on the community. The data gathered in a registry provides for numerous research opportunities. Better epidemiological data and patient care improvement are only some of the benefits of having a disease database. More important, a registry will facilitate meaningful interactions between patients, physicians, and the stakeholders, paving the way for better health policies.

How the PKDR can help patients.

Patients will benefit most from the establishment of a registry. The data gathered will provide significant information that will enable patients with PKD to lead better, longer lives. It is also the first step in finding relevant treatments, even possibly a cure. When patients can be identified through the database, it is then easier to form support groups that can provide clinical and psychosocial assistance. Through these collaborations, policy changes may be pushed that may help protect patients and persons at risk from insurance and employment discrimination.

Will the PKDR benefit physicians?

Of course, a registry also benefits the physicians caring for these patients. It leads to a better understanding of the disease, increases awareness of the disease among the general public, and gives physicians and scientists abundant material for research.

How will other stakeholders benefit?

For the policymaking bodies in our community like Philhealth, a registry makes available vital data that will enable the creation of policies on health benefits, health insurance, and employment. It also provides a venue for addressing patients’ needs through advocacies.

What’s in it for me?

Well, a registry benefits you! Whether you are a part of the clinical team, or a patient, or a policymaker, a registry will help because of the meaningful data it provides.

2016 marks an important year for the PKDR because it will be formally opened to all PSN members. We are excited for your upcoming enthusiastic participation in this endeavor. The success of this project will surely pave the way for more studies in the future.

The Committee on Continuing Medical Education has gone through experiences worthy of leaps and bounds over the last three years.  The pride of the Committee during this time was the development of the In-Service Examination for the Nephrology Fellows-in-Training.  This was borne out of the desire of the Society to better prepare the Fellows for private practice by enhancing their theoretical knowledge.  It was the hope of the Committee Members that the In-service examination will prime the Fellows for their Nephrology Board Examination.

The first In-Service Examination was held during 2014 in a written format.  The Committee underwent a test construction seminar held my Dr. Nenita Collantes.  Questions were constructed by the Committee Members and were critiqued by each other.  Upon completion, the test was conducted simultaneously among different testing centers that year.

To push the challenge further, the committee also boasts of facilitating the second In-Service Training Examination last 2015.  Aiming to help the environment in their own little way, the committee was able to administer the examination in a paperless and fully electronic fashion.  This computerized examination was constructed by the committee in a span of three months.  It was delivered simultaneously for all fellows in four testing sites.  Results were out very quickly.

Because of the success of the paperless exam last year, the Committee decided to pursue this electronic examination which was held in four simultaneous testing centers: University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital, Chinese General Hospital, St. Luke’s Medical Center and Chiong Hua Hospital.  The examination was held last January 23, 2016 and lasted for a half day.   There were a total of 70 examinees: 34 first year fellows (passing rate of 38%); 33 second year fellows (passing rate of 27%); and three board eligible nephrologists (passing rate of 33%).

The Committee would like to congratulate the Top 5 among the first year fellows: Alpuerto, Michelle (MMC); Quimbo-Chu, Abigail (CHH); Austria, Nickson (UP-PGH); Ng, Camille (NKTI); Lu, Wendoyn (NKTI).  The Top 5 among the second year fellows and board eligible nephrologists are as follows: Herceda, Aileen (UST); Bautista, Amerigo Jr. (NKTI); Zapanta, Jan (UP-PGH); Ramos, Dezi (VMMC); Gonzales, Karen (Board eligible).

The Continuing Medical Education Committee is led by Dr. Anne Margaret Ang.   Our very consistent and dedicated adviser is Dr. Nenita Collantes.  The Chair of the Information Technology Committee and the Computer Mastermind who was encoded the examination questions is Dr. William Gregory Rivero.  Members of the  Western Visayas Chapter who conducted the examination in Cebu were Dr. Gerry Mayo and Dr. Karen Licuanan. Devoted Committee Members include Dr. Maria Kristina Alolod, Dr. Tyrone Coseip, Dr. Paul Joseph Galutira, Dr. Rachelle Reyleigh Geronimo-Duruin, Dr. Ivy Kathryn Ilagan, Dr. Marissa Elizabeth Lim and  Dr. Jehan Jill Llave

The Committee hopes to invite more members.  They desire to continue at the forefront of expanding knowledge.

Upon the announcement and implementation of Philhealth Circular No. 022-2015 on August 2015, which increased the benefits of Philhealth members with CKD from 45 to 90 hemodialysis claims, the Individual Medical Assistance Program (IMAP) of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) for Chnronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemo- and peritoneal dialysis was suspended. On March 11, 2016, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, invited all dialysis stakeholders to a meeting at their office in the Lung Center of the Philippines to introduce its new IMAP scheme for  dialysis patients.

The new assistance program for Philhealth members emphasized a shift of support from dialysis sessions to medicines (erythropoietin) amounting to P14,000 x 6 claims for a maximum of P84,000 in a year. Non-Philhealth members who avail of the IMAP will get P20,000 for their hemodialysis procedure every other month and P35,000 for dialysis solutions for peritoneal dialysis patients every other month.

Anemia is indeed a very big complication of CKD. The PSN thanks the PCSO for its forsight and consistent support for the plight of CKD patients undergoing dialysis in the country.

Please see the linked Powerpoint brief for more details.

WKD is a celebrated event focused on kidney health across the globe. It aims to raise awareness about protective behaviours and preventable risk factors to avoid the burden of kidney disease.

For this year, the theme for WKD is “Kidney Disease and Obesity—Healthy Lifestyle for Healthy Kidneys.”

In celebration of the theme for World Kidney Day 2017, Obesity and Kidney Diseases, the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) Section of Nephrology, in cooperation with Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN), prepared several activities that aim to promote awareness and encourage a more active and healthier lifestyle among Filipinos.

Obesity-related information in the form of infographics and video presentations were disseminated via social media thru Facebook and Twitter using the hashtags #move4kidneys #ShooObesity #FightAgainstFats #WKDPhil2017. The “#move4kidneys” is a symbolic gesture to remember that kidneys are vital organs and that they should be taken care of. This action urges everyone around the globe, from all cultures and ages, to keep fit and active.

Various media appearances in radio and television were also initiated to promote awareness.

On March 5 (Sunday), UP-PGH being this year’s host, started a WKD Kick off Event which started with a parade around the UP Diliman Campus, followed by a flashmob, a public gathering of patients, relatives, staff, medical residents, nephrology fellows and consultants, performing a choreographed dance number at the iconic Quezon Hall in UP Diliman Campus. This was participated by the PSN, Pediatric Nephrology Society of the Philippines (PNSP), UP-PGH, Chinese General Hospital (CGH), Makati Medical Center (MMC), National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI), St. Luke Medical Center (SLMC), The Medical City, University of Sto.Tomas (UST), Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC), Dialysis PH Support Group, Renal Nurses Association of the Philippines (RENAP), and different Hemodialysis units around Metro Manila. The event was concluded through a MetaBEAT Exercise for all headed by Coach Toni and Coach Jim Saret of ABSCBN The Biggest Loser.

On March 9, each PSN Chapter and Hemodialysis unit was challenged to create their own WKD event. A series of activities have been lined up to celebrate WKD all over the Philippines. The different institutions nationwide held their own flashmob dance, zumba marathon, lay forum, quiz show, yoga, funrun, brisk walking exercises. Indeed, World Kidney Day 2017’s campaign to raise awareness on Obesity and Kidney Disease and #move4kidneys is a success! Together, let us continue to get moving and Celebrate our Kidneys!
